Shopping

Mapchick’s Isla Mujeres app has hundreds of places to shop for anything during your stay on the island.

Search what you’re looking for under the Shopping tab on Mapchick’s Isla Mujeres app.

Sunscreen, baby items, clothing, fresh fruit, juice, alcohol and all the food!  Souvenirs, recommended jewelry stores, custom art and more! Search what you’re looking for under the shopping tab and if it doesn’t come up send us a message and we may be able to track it down for you!

Two major stores will have most of what you need, Chedraui pronounced “che draw eee”   This store is similar to a Walmart with groceries, household items, pharmacy, bakery, clothing, even small appliances and furniture. The other grocery store we like is Super Aki, two locations on the island, this is mainly a grocery store. Willy’s is a small grocery located in centro that sometimes will have items you can’t find elsewhere. Dunosusa stores sell many items in bulk, there are three on the island.

Shopping tips
  • If you’re not from a larger city or shop at places that require you bring your own shopping bag you may not be familiar with bringing your own shopping bag to stores. Most places on the island require you bring your own bag, Super Aki and Chedraui have bags you can purchase for a small amount. Some rental properties will supply shopping bags for you.
  • Tip the person who bags your groceries, these people work for tips and are not paid a salary.
  • You  might have to look for items in different sections of the store than you are used to. Milk, you may find some milk in the cooler at Chedraui, but a lot of milk is boxed and not kept in a cooler.  Distilled water may be found near the irons. Contact lens solution is behind the pharmacy counter, you have to ask for it. You probably will not be able to find specific brands you are used to. Pickles are hard to find or non-existent. Vitamins & supplements are rare to find. K-pods if you brought your Kuerig the pods can be hard to find, so bring your own pods. Coffee creamer is also hard to find. For some reason Dr. Pepper & Mountain Dew is a hard to find so you may have to get used to something new on vacation. This is a small sampling of things I’ve looked for 🙂
  • Your trip to Chedraui is an adventure, embrace it!  Send me a message if you find an item in a “different” spot.
Alcohol/Liquor

Alcohol sales in stores Monday-Saturday, 10am-9pm. Alcohol sales in stores on sundya are from 10am-5pm. During election time, liquor sales in stores(don’t worry, you can still have drinks at restaurants and bars) are suspended fro 48 hours.

Chedraui has a good selection of wine, beer and liquor and has recently added more hard seltzer drinks, may not be brands you are used to but I find Helix brand seltzers are pretty good. In centro look up Cava del Duro on the app, smaller selections but you’ll find something you like there 🙂

Jewelry

Beware of the jewelry shops offering free tequila, too often people are talked into purchasing jewelry or tequila only to come home and find their credit cards were charged way more than it should have been. Add insult to injury when you find out the jewelry is very poor quality and high priced and they sold you a bottle of very sub-par tequila. Another very common scam when someone comes up to you and tells you they recognize you from your resort, they were your waiter, come see my uncle’s, brother’s or whoever’s shop. These people don’t really know you, but they can be very charming and convincing 🙂 Don’t fall for this!

Only use recommended jewelry stores–marked as Mapchick Gems on the app.

Flowers

Mapchick’s app has lists flower shops , search Flowers under the shopping tab.

You don’t want to shop?

I get it, you might want a break from that on vacation.  Mapchick’s Isla Mujeres app has several delivery and concierge services that will do the shopping for you! Look under the services tab.

Some liquor pics from Chedraui a couple years ago, prices have changed.
