Using credit cards on Isla Mujeres- a common question
Credit card use on Isla Mujeres is a topic that comes up often, so we made a point to gather updated, firsthand information during our most recent trips. While updating business details, we asked each place whether they accept credit cards and if any additional fees apply. The good news: nearly every business we visited accepts cards, and most do not charge extra fees. Only a couple of exceptions came up, and we’ve noted those in the Mapchick Isla Mujeres app.
We also tested this ourselves at several restaurants and had no issues. As a rule, I keep every receipt and take photos for reference. Once home, I compare them to my statements, and everything matched perfectly—no surprise fees, and the exchange rate reflected the standard bank rate.
That said, it’s still smart to carry enough cash to cover your meal before ordering. Always confirm that a business is accepting cards beforehand, as occasional internet or technical issues can happen anywhere. When we do pay by card, we tip in cash and let the server know while they’re processing the payment. If a business mentions they prefer cash despite accepting cards, we do our best to respect that.
For smaller restaurants and food carts, we typically stick to cash—even if cards are accepted. Prices are low, and it feels fair not to pass along processing fees for such small purchases. We apply the same thinking for minor transactions at bars or cafés.
One reason we feel comfortable using cards is the payment process itself. In most places, the server brings a handheld card reader directly to the table, so your card never leaves your sight. if a server takes the card to the cash register to process, I always follow them. You can review the total before completing the transaction and receive a printed receipt immediately. I also use a card that allows me to lock and unlock it between uses, which adds an extra layer of security.
A couple of things we didn’t expect: Some taxi drivers now have card machines, and even a few beach vendors are equipped to take cards.
That said, there are still places where we avoid using credit cards: Tourist souvenir and jewelry shops top that list, as there have been too many reports of fraud associated with those types of businesses. We also tend to avoid using cards with golf cart rental companies, mainly because many add extra fees on top of already high prices.
Where do we feel comfortable using a card? Most restaurants and beach clubs, as well as larger stores like grocery chains, trusted jewelry shops, higher-end boutiques, flower shops, hardware stores, and even medical offices.
In short, using a credit card on Isla Mujeres is generally safe and convenient—as long as you stay aware, ask questions, and use a bit of common sense.
